It’s worth noting that the reason the beaver wants the water to be deeper in the first place is that the Beaver is using the deep water as a pantry:
All summer and fall, beavers gather up branches with the leaves they actually eat, and store it in the deep end of the Pond, where the cold water and limited oxygen keep the leaves fresh all winter, so when it’s negative 20 outside, a beaver can take a dip out of it’s lodge, grab some refrigerated leaves in the (relatively) warmer water and go back to it’s cozy little nap hole while everything else is out there suffering and eating bark or the like.
So it’s less “there’s a leak in my house” and more “OH SHIT THE FRIDGE!!”
This instinct is so deep-rooted that if you play an AUDIO RECORDING of running water around beavers, they will immediately show up with mud and sticks trying to patch the nonexistent leak.
So in short, yes, when they see/hear running water and think “absolutely not”
i’m staying with my parents a couple weeks until my new apartment is ready so they sit and watch me play zelda whenever they have a minute. and they always say stuff like “doesn’t link get lonely?” and “don’t you think he’s tired from running everywhere?” and “does he have a home?” like exactly exactly thats what i’m always saying. they have got to get on tumblr
unpopular opinion but i love the scene with “no way out” playing over kenai’s story much better than the deleted scene. a lot of ppl prefer the original where kenai straight up says “i killed a bear”. i mean, you’re valid if you have that opinion.
but to me the subtlety of kenai saying “i did something very wrong”, not quite saying what he actually did, but then he tells koda, “your mother is not coming”. this scene focuses more on koda’s reaction: koda picks up the pieces, “i don’t like this story”, and suddenly it hits him.
i love that the confession is not direct. i love this version of “no way out”, it’s way sadder than the official, “dancier” one. the lyrics that hit me the most were “i know i can’t be free / but i can’t see another way / and i can’t face another day”. the song ends here in the movie.
brother bear is too beautiful and too painful for its own good.
